Yasmin Diktaş is a Dutch dancer, choreographer and teaching artist of Kurdish and Indonesian heritage, based in Alkmaar and Amsterdam. A graduate of the Academie voor Theater en Dans at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, she received the Henny Kamerman Dansersprijs in 2024.[2] Her work connects dance with social themes, giving voice to intergenerational trauma, identity, liberation and healing through movement.[1][6]
Education and award [ book ]
Diktaş trained as a dance teacher (BA Docent Dans) at the Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam. In 2024, while still a student, she was named one of two winners of the Henny Kamerman Dansersprijs, the ATD Fonds prize for the most innovative dancer/maker of the academic year. The jury praised her social vision and her belief in the healing and therapeutic power of dance, noting the dedication of the eight dancers who travelled to Amsterdam to support her prize presentation.[2] The award was presented on 30 September 2024 at the Academie voor Theater en Dans.[3]
Azadî [ book ]
Azadî (the Kurdish word for "freedom") is Diktaş's first professional production, developed from a research process that began in November 2023 and was supported by the Henny Kamerman Dansersprijs.[4] In the work she investigates how oppression, colonial history and intergenerational trauma settle in the body and the (sub)conscious, reflecting on processing and healing through her movement language.[4]
The production was part-financed through a crowdfunding campaign on Voordekunst, premiered on 9 March 2025 at Theater de Drukkerij in Alkmaar, and was performed on 8 April 2025 at Podium Mozaïek in Amsterdam.[5]
RASA [ book ]
Her current work, RASA: The feeling of feeling everything, is a physical journey through high sensitivity, emotion and the traces left by generations. The title takes the Javanese concept of rasa: feeling as bodily, emotional and sensory knowledge. Within Javanese dance philosophy she moves between Alus (refinement and stillness) and Kasar (raw expression), working from the premise that emotions, experiences and traumas are passed down across generations and settle in the body.[1]
RASA is created with Lynn Bartels, Tom van Wee, Keith Montgomery, Melisa Diktaş and Anne Suurendonk, and is supported by Stichting ZSAlliance, the Cultuurfonds, Karavaan Alkmaar, the Victoriefonds Cultuurprijs and Podium Mozaïek. It plays at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2026 (Nowhere, Black Studio, 11–13 September).[1]
Teaching and community work [ book ]
Alongside her work as a maker, Diktaş maintains what she calls the triangle of making, teaching and dancing. She has taught at the 5 O'Clock Class, gives workshops in secondary education, and works in asylum seekers' centres with Stichting De Vrolijkheid, combining dance and coaching to foster resilience.[5] She also appeared in ONS LAND: De Vrijheidshow of the Indisch Herinneringscentrum.[6]
